THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO START PHOTOGRAPHY!

So! You have decided to take up the hobby of photography. But how exactly can you start shooting photo? Don’t worry, today i will lay out the basics of photography and by the end of this blog post. You should be able to start taking better than average photos.

Whether you have a camera or not, this rules and methods all apply. You can even shoot amazing photos on your smartphone! Let’s start

. ISO/EXPOSURE

. WHITE BALANCE

. How to pick the right gear

. Photography courses

. Photography community

ISO/EXPOSURE

This is in my opinion the MOST important aspect of photography. If you learn this properly with some practice, I guarantee you that you can take much better photos than you currently can. In the future modules, i will specifically write a blog teaching you all on how to get the best exposure for specific scenarios. This is the absolute basic of photography and most vital. This iso/exposure blog would be written in the future but let me just give you what iso/exposure means!

ISO: ISO is basically the sensitivity of light, the higher the iso, the brighter your image would be. Clear? Iso normally goes as low as 100 on your smartphones or DSLR camera but the upper limit of ISO can be much higher. On the Nikon d7500, its ISO can go as high as 1.6 million! Incredible ain’t it! But as for complete beginners I wouldn’t recommend going higher than 1600 as it can make the image too noisy.

Exposure: SHUTTER SPEED/APERTURE.

Shutter speed: shutter speed is basically how long the shutter will be on for, the shorter the shutter speed, the shorter the time for the shutter to stay open which means that there will be less time to the light to be collected, same, the longer the shutter speed, the more light will be collected.

APERTURE: so for the aperture, this can be slightly harder to understand as I didn’t understand it at the start but i think some of you smart individuals can figure what aperture means easily. Aperture is basically how big the hole would be opened but the confusing part is that lower the aperture with is the f. Number, the bigger the hole and likewise.

In general, iso, shutter speed and exposure must be all be used and compensated to get the PERFECT PHOTO!

White balance

Ok so the white balance is not so much for the beginners but as for the small portion of slightly more advanced photographers, White balance (WB) is the process of removing colour that don’t seem realistic. Proper camera’s white balance has to take into account the "color temperature" of a light source, which refers to the relative warmth or coolness of white light or in other words the colour of the light source which yellow means a warmer light source and a blue light source are normally a cooler image.

Photography gear

When it comes to photography gear, there are many type of gears. A lens a camera filters etc. but for my upcoming blogs, a smartphone would work just fine. For photography gears, i would only briefly cover through it as if i wanted to talk about it, i could just go on and on and list down all the models but as i said, that would be a blog for the future. The most basic gear you would need is a basic DSLR camera with a good lens/smartphone. I would emphasise why a camera lens is more important than a camera body in the future. And also if can, get a editing software. I promise you, it would make your image 10000 times better. Trust me on this one. And perhaps a camera bag can be useful if you are those type of travelling photographer.

Photography courses

A photography course can be beneficial on your way to becoming a good photographer. You can always visit the common websites such as Coursera and learn photography . But if you bear with me here, i will write 3 blogs every week and i trust after 10 weeks, everything that i need to say about photography can be said and you can save 20-30 dollars! And also i will update often so following me is also as if having a photography course.

Photography communities

A photography community can be one of the most important factor of your photography journey. You can join Facebook groups. A supportive photography community can allow you to have more motivation on your photography journey and you can seek help from experts. There will be many photography events around you which you can join too.

After reading this blog, you should have a rough understanding of what photography is and the basic components you need to get started. It really is not that hard! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me and get your question answered!

Happy snapping!
